Author’s Note: The Seni Cards – A True Historical System Rediscovered
This story, though fictionalized, is based on real people, real history, and a real deck of cards.
The Seni-Horoscope deck was first published in 1898 in Leipzig, Germany by L. Ramio through Paul List Publishing. It was designed as a comprehensive fortune-telling system that integrated astrology and combinatory symbolism. Unlike the Tarot, which evolved slowly over centuries, the Seni system was deliberately created to provide layered readings based on four rotating images per card.
A deck was purchased in Chicago in 1899 and brought to North Dakota by Hortensia Faustman, my great-aunt. After being passed to my grandmother and then to me, it remained in our family for over a century—quietly, almost forgotten.
Only after retiring and researching it seriously with the help of the internet and AI tools did I uncover the true historical significance of the Seni system.
Today, very few complete sets are known to exist.
This novel was written to bring awareness to the deck’s existence—and to help bring it back into the world.
